Welshpool
Welshpool ( Welsh Y Trallwng ) is a town in the Welsh county of Powys ; it lies in the valley of the River Severn and has had market rights since 1263 .
Welshpool is the center of a vast rural area; The largest Welsh cattle market has been held here every Monday since the 7th century. The proximity to the border with England was already reflected in pro-English tendencies in the Middle Ages; the residents were traditionally speaking English. The cityscape with a wide main street and many brick houses is not medieval, but rather Georgian .
The Church of St. Mary dates back to 1240. There you can see the grave monuments of the Counts of Powys. The Powysland Museum , founded in 1874, shows mainly Roman finds and local history objects. Offa's Dyke leads past the outskirts .
A narrow-gauge railway line opened in 1903, the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway (W & LLR), connected Welshpool with the town of Llanfair Caereinion, 14 km away . The line was shut down in 1956; since 1963 the restored steam train has been operated on a non-profit basis as a tourist attraction.
2.5 km south of the city lies Powis Castle on a ridge . The castle, which dates back to the 12th century, was given to the National Trust in 1952 .
