The Österreichpark is a public park on the banks of the Spree in the Berlin district of Charlottenburg . The 3000 square meter former Sömmeringanlage was expanded into a park landscape with funds from Österreich Werbung Deutschland and opened on May 12, 2013 under the name Österreichpark.
Location and surroundings
The park is located south of Mierendorffplatz on the Caprivibrücke in the Charlottenburg area of Kalowswerder , which - also known as Mierendorff Island - is enclosed by the Spree , the Westhafen Canal and the Charlottenburg connecting canal. The green area stretches around 200 meters along the north bank of the Spree. To the west it is bounded by a remnant of an oxbow river of the Spree, about 50 meters long. To the north, the sports field is adjacent to the listed sports hall in Charlottenburg (also: Sömmering-Halle ), which was built from 1962–1964 according to plans by the architect Ludwig Leo . In the east, the park ends on Sömmeringstraße , which leads south of the Caprivibrücke as Wintersteinstraße to Otto-Suhr-Allee . On the other side of the park entrance in the corner of Sömmeringstrasse / Am Spreebord, the new production rooms and the sculpture center of the traditional art foundry Hermann Noack have been located since 2010 .
The riverside path of the park is a branch of the opposite Spreeweg , hiking trail 01 of the 20 green main paths in Berlin. To the east, the riverside path crosses under the Caprivibrücke and immediately after the bridge passes the beach bar and the CapRivi beer garden and a little later the striking facade of the historic Charlottenburg power station on Siemenssteg , which is designed in the Brandenburg brick Gothic style , with ten-meter high sandstone towers and its steel arch construction a landmark of the course of the river in 1900. After circling the Spreealtarm in Bonhoefferufer , the path continues to the west to the Schlossbrücke at the Schlossgarten Charlottenburg .

Development of the site, Sömmeringanlage
The park-like area on the Caprivibrücke was previously called the Sömmeringanlage, but it was neglected and was considered fallow . As for the adjacent Sömmeringstrasse, the name was given to the anatomist , anthropologist , paleontologist and inventor Samuel Thomas von Soemmerring , who discovered the yellow spot in the retina of the human eye. During a walk through the neighborhood, the district mayor of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf , Monika Thiemen , announced the development of the site:
“Landscape planners see the Spree as a green space that traverses the city and connects the recreation areas Müggelsee , Treptower Park , Tiergarten , Charlottenburger Schloßgarten and the Spandauer Uferanalagen. Lenné started to think about this as early as 1840. The Spree, which is often penned in by high bank walls, loading streets and buildings, has been greened in many places since 1952 - initially in the emergency program. In Charlottenburg, the horticultural department under Joachim Kaiser laid flat embankments and footpaths on the Spree. Especially the south bank was suitable for this because of the former towpath . The Sömmering facility was built on the north bank. "
The embankment to the Spree was designed as a lying area along the tree-lined path. On the land side, the employees of the Green Spaces Office laid out further paths with park benches, a lawn for sunbathing and a playground with climbing frames. In January 2011, two poplars whose crowns had died had to be felled on the playground . Even before it opened as the Österreichpark, Berliners used the area extensively for relaxation.
Extension to the Österreichpark
Since the Berlin districts have fewer and fewer funds available to create new parks and maintain green spaces, the national tourism organization Österreich Werbung Deutschland and the nine Austrian regional tourism organizations, in consultation with the district office of the partly weed-out area, made funds available for redesigning the area it became an advertising space for the Alpine republic. In addition, the tourism organizations are provisionally financing the maintenance until 2016. In addition to the existing systems and the old trees, there were:
- At the entrance to Sömmeringstraße there is an alpine rock garden made of light granite chunks from Carinthia , surrounded by gentians , silver thistles , Alpine asters , bellflowers or Swiss stone pines and a rose garden in which flowers in the red and white national colors of Austria are planted (red clover, white daisies).
- In the upper part on the border to the sports field an avenue with Styrian apple trees.
Earlier park benches have been partially replaced by Salzburger Almbänke, which have large advertising stamps for the holiday region.
In the Spree / Spreealtarm corner, a broad, curved Danube lounger, as found in many parts of the 450 kilometer long Donausteig , invites you to relax and unwind on the Danube .
In addition, a telescope was mounted as an art installation in which a picture of the Tyrolean Alps can be seen.
The park was opened on May 12, 2013 after a hike in which around 350 guests took part. The hike led by the Austrian ambassador Ralph Scheide , who took over the patronage of the park project, from the embassy in the Stauffenbergstrasse through the zoo along the Landwehr Canal to the park. At the opening party that followed, the Austrian ambassador, the district mayor Reinhard Naumann and Judith Stückler, head of the district council meeting (BVV) officially inaugurated the Sömmering complex as the Österreichpark . Each of the nine Austrian federal states presented themselves at the festival with an adventure station. During a picnic there were wine tastings and culinary specialties such as Linzer Torte from the Charlottenburg twin city Linz . Birgitt Eltzel commented in the Berliner Zeitung that the Alpine republic is one of the most popular holiday destinations for Germans and wants to stay that way: "For a higher five-digit sum, no more precise figures, the 'Österreich-Werbung' has given Berlin a park."
The riverside path along the Spree is part of the Austria Park and is also popular for fishing.
