Christopher Sande

Christopher "Chris" Joseph Sande , also known as Christian Joseph Sande , (born February 10, 1964 in Kenya ) is a former Kenyan middleweight boxer and bronze medalist at the 1988 Olympic Games.

Boxing career

The 1.73 m tall southpaw began boxing in Kenya in 1979. He won his first tournament in Kenya in 1982, and in 1985 he won the 11th international King's Cup in Thailand .

In 1988 he represented his home country in the middleweight division at the 24th Summer Olympics in Seoul . After a bye in the first round, he then beat Juan Carlos Montiel from Uruguay by knockout in the third round and moved into the round of 16. There he defeated Paul Kamela from Cameroon 5-0 on points and reached the quarter-finals, where he also prevailed 5-0 against Franco Wanyama from Uganda. In the semifinals he met the eventual Olympic champion Henry Maske , to whom he lost 5-0.

In 1989 he became a professional boxer in the USA and moved to Las Vegas . He played 41 fights in the US, Great Britain, Ireland, Burkina Faso, Mexico and Uruguay, of which he won 19. His most important opponents were WBA world champion Alejandro Hernández , IBF world champion Luis Ramón Campas and IBO world champion Manny Sobral .

After his playing career, he became a boxing instructor at the California Fitness Center in Northridge , Los Angeles County .
