Joachim Balke
Joachim "Jochen" Balke (born September 12, 1917 in Dortmund ; † January 19, 1944 missing near Novgorod ) was a German swimmer who won the European title in 1938.
Balke won the title in the 200-meter breaststroke swim at the German Championships in 1936, swimming for Westphalia Dortmund . At the Olympic Games in 1936 , he reached the finals on this route and took sixth place.
Balke's most successful year was 1938. On November 12, he set a new world record over 100 meters chest in 1: 09.5 minutes. There were no championships over this distance, however, over 200 meters he became German champion in 2: 43.2 minutes , meanwhile starting for the Bremen SV ; at the European Swimming Championships in London in 1938 , he won in 2: 45.8 minutes.
In 1940 and 1941 Balke managed to win two German championship titles in the 200-meter chest, and in 1940 he won another title on the short course.
