Maria Johanna Sjöberg (born March 8, 1978 in Bromölla ) is a former Swedish swimmer .

Career

Sjöberg celebrated her greatest successes over the butterfly distances and with the Swedish freestyle and layered relay. In particular, she was able to celebrate many victories on the short course.

At the European Short Course Championships in Rostock in 1996 , she won her first medals in international championships. When she won the gold medal over 50 meters and 100 meters butterfly, she set a new European record.

Two and a half years later, in Stockholm , in 00: 58.93 minutes, she also set a new European record on the long track over the 100 meter butterfly .

She took part in the Summer Olympics three times. In 1996 in Atlanta she was ninth in the 100 meter butterfly. With the Swedish 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay she was fifth, with the 4 × 200 meter freestyle relay ninth and with the 4 × 100 meter layer relay she finished tenth.

In 2000 in Sydney , she celebrated her greatest success in her Olympic career when she won the bronze medal with the 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay. In addition, she was tenth over the 100 meter butterfly and with the 4 × 100 meter layer relay.

In her last Olympics, in 2004 in Athens , she reached with the Swedish 4 x 100 meters and 4 × 200 meter freestyle relay in each case the final and ended it with the seventh or eighth overall place.
