Juri Wladimirowitsch Kudinow ( Russian Юрий Владимирович Кудинов ; born February 27, 1979 in Volgograd , Russian SFSR , USSR ) is a long-distance swimmer who starts first for Russia and since 2010 for Kazakhstan . For a long time he specialized in the 25-kilometer distance. Since 2011 it has mainly started over 10 km.

Life

Yuri Kudinow started swimming when he was 7 years old because his parents sent him there on medical advice to get rid of his colds. His first coach, Vladimir Sakharov, has looked after him throughout his career. At first he swam the usual distances, but after taking 2nd place in the Russian championship in long-distance swimming at the age of 16 (1995), he decided to stay in this discipline.

After a 5th place at his first open water world championships in 1998, Kudinow clearly dominated the distance over 25 km between 2000 and 2008 with a total of five gold, two silver and one bronze medals. With a total of five titles at open water world championships, he is the second most successful male participant of all time after Thomas Lurz (Germany). He won another gold medal at the European Swimming Championships in 2002 in Berlin over 25 km. He had to swim at a water temperature of 18 to 19 ° C and an air temperature of 20 ° C.

He won his world championship title in Melbourne in 2007 by over 2 minutes. Also in 2007, a group of swimmers attempted to swim a world record across the English Channel . He achieved the third best time in history: 7: 06.0 hours.

In 2008, after losing his place in the Russian national team after winning the bronze medal in the World Cup and an 8th place in the European Championship, he retired for some time and took on a TV show on Volgograd city television.

Kudinow acquired Kazakh citizenship in 2010 and represented the country at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, where he finished 22nd in 1: 52: 59.0 hours.

His naturalization and that of other foreign athletes, however, fuel the resentment of Kazakh sports commentators, who believe that the athletes of foreign origin are taking away opportunities for local talent.
