In 2008 France took partin the Summer Olympics for the 25th time. The flag bearer at the opening ceremony was the canoeist Tony Estanguet . On July 2nd, 2008, the French State Secretary for Sport, Bernard Laporte, announced the goal of 40 medals to defend seventh place in the medal table compared to 2004.
The French team competed in 21 sports. A total of 323 athletes took part, of which 315 were previously nominated and eight had moved up (three in rowing, three in fencing and two in handball). The National High Performance Sports Commission announced the final list on July 28, 2008.
