Jean-David Bernard (born July 27, 1977 in Melun , France ) is a former French rower .

Career

Bernard's first international appearance in rowing dates back to 1998, when he rowed with the French lightweight four without a helmsman in Hazewinkel to 8th place overall at the World Cup . The youth team with Bernard, Jean-Christophe Bette , Jean-Baptiste Dupy and Vincent Montabonel also won the gold medal later in the same year at the Nations Cup in Ioannina, the then unofficial world championships for the U23 age group. After this success, Bernard rowed in the open age group, where he won a bronze medal with an experienced team led by Xavier Dorfman , Yves Hocdé and Laurent Porchier at the 1999 World Championships in St. Catharines, Canada. Nevertheless, it was not enough for him to qualify for the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. Instead, he competed in a lightweight two-man without a helmsman at the World Championships for the non-Olympic boat classes in Zagreb and came in 10th.

Then Bernard switched from the lightweight class to the open weight class. In the 2001 season he was used once in the four without a helmsman at the Rowing World Cup, but not yet taken into account for the title fights in Lucerne. It was not until the 2002 World Championships that he was a permanent member of the French national team, finishing in sixth place in the four-without. The following year the four-man rowed weakly with Bernard, only finishing 13th at the World Championships in Milan. Bernard therefore moved to eighth in the following Olympic year , competed in all World Cup regattas and finally also in the 2004 Olympic rowing regatta in Athens in this boat class. The crew with Bastien Ripoll , Bastien Gallet , Jean-Baptiste Macquet , Julien Peudecoeur , Donatien Mortelette , Anthony Perrot , Bernard, Laurent Cadot and helmsman Christophe Lattaignant reached the Olympic final, but finished sixth and last.

In the new Olympic cycle Bernard joined the Skull area , started right in the quadruple sculls at the 2005 World Championships in Gifu, Japan and was ranked fifth in the following year, the four did not go well and was in the cast Jonathan Coëffic , Bernard, Cédric Berrest and Julien Bahain in the World Cup 2006 only to 10th place. The shape was only correct again in the pre-Olympic year 2007, when the silver medal was won at the World Championships in Munich with the same cast . Bernard then slipped out of the foursome, started in the singles and fours at the 2008 World Cup, and was ultimately not nominated for the Summer Olympics in Beijing. In the coxless pair , he went instead with the 2008 European Championships in Athens at the start and won the bronze medal together with Laurent Cadot .

Bernard returned briefly to the belt area , rowed in a four-man without at the World Championships in Poland to 5th place and at the European Championships of the same year to another European Championship bronze medal with Cadot. He then ended his active career as a rower.

Bernard started for the Cercle Nautique de Melun association in his hometown. At a height of 1.90 m, his competition weight was around 82 kg.
