The CHI Health Center Omaha (known as Qwest Center Omaha until July 15, 2011 and as CenturyLink Center Omaha until September 1, 2018) is an exhibition and convention center with a multi-purpose hall in Omaha , Nebraska . The center is built on an area of almost 93,000 m², with an approximately 18,000 m² exhibition hall and around 5800 m² for conferences. Basketball and ice hockey games as well as concerts are held in the integrated hall, which can accommodate up to 18,975 people .

geography

The CHI Health Center is located on former Union Pacific Railroad property in North Downtown. It is separated from the Old Market district by Highway I-480 , which can be used directly to reach the center.

history

Planning and building

Despite the renovation of the Omaha Civic Auditorium in 1997, there were plans to build a new convention center and arena with the help of consultants. In November 1997, a commission recommended the Union Pacific property in North Downtown or an area adjacent to the Old Market in the southeast of downtown. The area in the southeast of downtown, preferred by the commission, would have resulted in a tax increase and was therefore not supported by the Nebraska Legislature and rejected in 1998. In the autumn of 1998 the plan to build on the current place arose, with private money instead of a tax increase.

In May 2000, Omaha voters approved bonds of $ 198 million to build the center and set up the Metropolitan Entertainment & Convention Authority (MECA), a non-profit organization to build and operate it. The day before, pledges of $ 75 million were made for the project from private sponsors, a third of which came from the Peter Kiewit Foundation . In August 2000, MECA was awarded a 99-year lease for the center. MECA has also been responsible for the operation of the Omaha Civic Auditorium since 2004 and for the TD Ameritrade Park Omaha since 2009 .

The Kiewit center was built between March 2001 and September 2003 , the architecture company being the DLR Group .

Naming rights

In August 2003, Qwest signed a 15-year $ 14.05 million contract with MECA for the naming rights. After Qwest was bought by CenturyLink in early 2011, the center's name was changed to CenturyLink Center Omaha on July 15, 2011 .

On September 1, 2018, the arena was renamed the CHI Health Center Omaha . This was due to a sponsorship agreement with CHI Health, a hospital company based in Omaha. The contract was valued at $ 23.6 million over 20 years.

extension

In the summer of 2006 the hall was expanded by 1700 seats.

capacity

At concerts, the hall can be used by 18,100 or 18,975 people, depending on the position of the stage. There is space for 17,100 visitors for ice hockey games and 18,320 people for basketball games.

After that, the Mavericks moved to the new Baxter Arena on the university campus. Both teams play in leagues of the NCAA and were previously in the Civic Auditorium.
