Alexander Nikolajewitsch Selin ( Russian Александр Николаевич Зелин , scientific transliteration Aleksandr Nikolaevič Zelin ; born May 6, 1953 in Perewalsk , Voroshilovgrad Oblast , Ukrainian SSR ) is a retired Russian Colonel General and since May 2012 Assistant to the Russian Defense Minister .

Military career

In 1976 he graduated from the military aviation school in Khabarovsk with honors and began his service in the Soviet air force as a fighter pilot with the 787th fighter regiment in the group of the Soviet Armed Forces in Germany (GSSD) at Finow airfield near Eberswalde .

In the following years he served in various positions, including a. as a squadron commander and commander of the 115th Guards Fighter Regiment in the Uzbek SSR .

In 1988 he graduated from the military academy of the air forces "JA Gagarin" and in the mid-1990s held higher posts, such as that of the first deputy commander in chief of the 23rd Army of the Air Force and Air Defense in Transbaikalia , as well as that of the commander in chief of the 14th Army Air Force and Air Defense in the Siberian Military District .

In 1997 he graduated from the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces and during the Second Chechen War temporarily (from 2001) commanded the 4th Army of the Air Force and Air Defense in the North Caucasus .

Since August 2002 he has been Deputy Commander in Chief of the Russian Air Force, responsible for aviation. Finally, on May 9, 2007, he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Air Force by decree of the then President of the Russian Federation , Vladimir Putin .

On April 26, 2012, Selin was released from his duties as Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Air Force by the then President of Russia, Dmitri Medvedev , dismissed from military service and on May 6, appointed Assistant to Defense Minister Serdyukov .

Alexander Selin is a candidate of military science and honored military aviator of the Russian Federation . He has completed more than 3,000 hours of flight time on more than 10 different types of aircraft, including Sukhoi Su-34 and Yakovlev Jak-130 . Selin was awarded the medals "Red Star" and "For Military Merit" , among others .
