The Shanghai Oriental Sports Center (SOSC; simplified Chinese : 上海 东方 体育 中心) is a sports facility complex in the Pudong district of the Chinese metropolis Shanghai . It includes a multi-purpose hall , called the Hallenstadion , with a maximum of 18,000 seats, a swimming pool ( natatorium ) with 5000 seats and a swimming stadium with 5000 seats as well as a media center. The city of Shanghai had the complex built for the 2011 swimming world championships . The ensemble was designed by the German architecture firm Gerkan, Marg and Partner , who won the tender for the design in 2008 . In less than two and a half years, the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center with an artificial lake was built on former industrial sites with an area of ​​394,000 on the banks of the Huangpu Jiang . The center was opened in time for the World Championships. The 14,000 permanently installed seats can be expanded to 18,000 with mobile seating. The main structure of the circular building is made of reinforced concrete . After the World Swimming Championships in 2012 followed by the World Short Track Speed Skating Championships , the 2014 FINA Diving World Cup and the 2015 World Figure Skating Championships . In 2011, 2012 and 2014 the international figure skating event Cup of China took place in the center. The indoor stadium of the SOSC is planned as one of eight venues for the 2019 Basketball World Cup .
