Sharon van Rouwendaal (born September 9, 1993 in Baarn ) is a Dutch swimmer . She competes in both open water and pool swimming and specializes in freestyle and back swimming.

Career

Sharon van Rouwendaal was born in Baarn and grew up in Soest in the province of Utrecht . She later moved to France with her parents but returned to the Netherlands in 2009 to train in Eindhoven . She has lived in France again since 2013 and trained with Philippe Lucas in Narbonne .

She first appeared internationally in 2008 when she won gold once and silver three times over the medium and long distances in freestyle at the European Junior Championships in Belgrade . In the same year she made her debut at the European Short Course Championships in Rijeka in the senior category and finished 12th and 17th respectively in the 800 and 400 m freestyle. In the following years she specialized increasingly in the backstroke under her coach Marcel Wouda in Eindhoven and won the European Short Course Championships 2010 in Eindhoven with silver over 100 and 200 m back, her first international medals among seniors. At the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai , she won bronze over the 200 m backseat, and thus for the first time a World Cup precious metal. She took part in the 2012 Olympic Games in London , where she finished sixth with the Dutch layer relay. In her two individual starts, she was eliminated over 100 m backs in the prelims and over 200 m backs in the semifinals.

Since returning to France, Sharon van Rouwendaal has concentrated on freestyle swimming again. In 2013 she won bronze in the 800 m freestyle at the European Short Course Championship and started swimming in open water for the first time in 2014. At the European Championships in Berlin she won gold over the 10 km and in the team competition over 5 km and silver over 5 km. She also took part in pool competitions and won silver in the 400 m freestyle; She finished fifth over the 800 m. At the 2014 World Short Course Championships in Doha , she won silver over the 400 m freestyle and bronze over the 800 m. She was also part of the Dutch 4 × 200 m relay, which won gold in a world record time.

At the 2015 World Championships in Kazan , van Rouwendaal started again in both open water and pool swimming. In the open water competitions she was fourth over 5 km and won silver both over 10 km and in the team competition together with Marcel Schouten and Ferry Weertman . In the pool she won another silver medal in the 400 m freestyle. In addition, she reached the finals over 1500 m and 800 m freestyle and was sixth and eighth. At the European Short Course Championships in Netanya in 2015 , she won bronze in the 800 m freestyle like two years earlier, and came fifth over half the distance. In 2016 she reached the finals over 400 and 800 m freestyle at the European Championships in pool swimming in London , where she was sixth and eighth respectively. At the European Open Water Championships in Hoorn she won bronze over 5 km and was fourth over 10 km.

Sharon van Rouwendaal has also been the Dutch champion several times since 2008 on the long and short course in freestyle, back and butterfly swimming .
