Flour sieve

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A flour sieve is a flat, fine sieve with a high edge made of wood or sheet metal - the shape is reminiscent of an upturned tambourine .

Flour sieves are used to clean the flour from bran and stored pests and to remove lumps of flour, which makes sifted flour easier to process. Since clean flour is generally available today, they are mostly only used to loosen the flour for fine doughs, e.g. B. in the production of pasta , cakes and pies .

One-hand flour sieve

For household needs , there are smaller, so-called one-hand flour sieves that can hold around 500 grams of flour. They have the shape of a large tin can and a side handle that uses a lever mechanism to rotate a metal star on the sieve bottom when the handle is alternately gripped tighter and looser. This allows the flour to be sifted with one hand while the other stirs the dough. One-hand flour sieves are also used to sprinkle cakes and tarts with powdered sugar .
