Shayne Angelo Toporowski (born August 6, 1975 in Paddockwood , Saskatchewan ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current coach , who has played three games for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League during his time as a professional .
Career
Toporowski was drafted in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft in the second round in 42nd position by the Los Angeles Kings . He then continued to play in the Western Hockey League for the Prince Albert Raiders . In October 1994 he was transferred from the Kings, along with Guy Leveque , Dixon Ward and Kelly Fairchild , to the Toronto Maple Leafs. For this came from the Leafs Éric Lacroix and Chris Snell , plus a four-round vote for the NHL Entry Draft in 1996 . Toporowski spent the following two seasons for the farm team, the St. John's Maple Leafs in the American Hockey League . For the 1996/97 season he was appointed to Toronto for three games in the NHL , so he could make his debut in this at the age of 21.
After that season he signed a two-year contract with the St. Louis Blues , but only played for their farm team, the Worcester IceCats in the AHL. The following year he signed with the Phoenix Coyotes , but could not prevail again. So he played again exclusively for the farm team, in this case for the Springfield Falcons .
From 2000 to 2012, he played in various European leagues. He spent his final season with the Quad City Mallards in the Central Hockey League before announcing his retirement.
After his resignation, Toporowski only served as assistant coach of the Holy Cross Crusaders in the first division of the Atlantic Hockey Association . Since 2014 he has been head coach of the Massachusetts University ice hockey team in the third division.
