Kurt Kleinendorst (born December 31, 1960 in Grand Rapids , Minnesota ) is an American ice hockey coach .
Player career
Kleinendorst played before his career as a professional player between 1979 and 1983 ice hockey at university level at Providence College . In 1980 he was selected in the fourth round of the draft of the National Hockey League (NHL) in a total of 77th place by the New York Rangers , but he never completed an NHL game. His professional career included positions in the North American International Hockey League and American Hockey League . In Europe he played in Finland, the Netherlands and Germany for the ERC Ingolstadt , the ECD Iserlohn and the ERC Selb .

In his last game station in Europe, at the ERC Selb in Germany, he acted as player coach. In 1991 Kleinendorst was the head coach of the Raleigh Ice Caps in the East Coast Hockey League and in 1993 was named coach of the year by the ECHL . In the 1993/94 season he led the IceCaps to the ECHL finals, where they were subject to Toledo Storm .
After a year-long stint with the San Diego Gulls in the International Hockey League , he returned to the IceCaps in 1995, where he was not only head coach but also manager.
From 1997 to 2000 he carried out this double function at Manchester Storm in the British Ice Hockey Superleague (BISL) and won the championship title with the team in 1999 and was named BISL Coach of the Year. Kleinendorst returned to the United States in 2000 and worked in various positions for the NHL club New Jersey Devils : first as assistant coach, then as sifter, and in 2006 he took over the post of head coach for the Lowell Devils , at that time New Jersey's farm team American Hockey League .
In 2010 he led the United States' U18 national team to gold medal at the World Cup in Belarus. Kleinendorst then directed the fortunes of the Binghamton Senators (farm team of the Ottawa Senators ) in the American Hockey League as head coach between 2010 and 2012 and led the team to the 2011 AHL championship.
In the 2012/13 season he was the head coach of the ice hockey team at the University of Alabama-Huntsville .
For the 2013/14 season he signed Iowa Wild from the American Hockey League and the farm team of the NHL club Minnesota Wild as head coach. There he was released from his duties in November 2014 after the team under his leadership had only won two wins from the first twelve games of the 2014/15 season.
At the end of November 2015 he became the head coach of ERC Ingolstadt in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL). In June 2016, Kleindorst dissolved his contract in Ingolstadt and joined the Binghamton Senators in the American Hockey League . He looked after the team even after they moved to Belleville . After the end of the 2017/18 season, his contract was not extended.
At the end of April 2019 he was introduced as the new head coach of the Nürnberg Ice Tigers . Kleinendorst turned down the offer to extend the contract after the 2019/20 season.
