Nils "Nisse" Ekman (born March 11, 1976 in Stockholm ) is a former Swedish ice hockey player who played for the Tampa Bay Lightning , San Jose Sharks and Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League , the SKA Saint Petersburg in the Continental Hockey League as well as Djurgårdens IF has played in the Elitserien .
Career
Ekman began his career in 1993 with the Hammarby IF Juniors . After he was able to convince quickly, he was appointed to the professional team in the Allsvenskan just a few months later and scored nine points in 18 games. The Calgary Flames became aware of him and selected him in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft in the fifth round at position 107. The following two years Ekman played for the professionals and the U20 team for Hammarby, before he moved to the Finnish SM-liiga in 1996 for the Espoo Blues .
In his first season in Finland he scored 24 goals and 19 assists in 50 games, but in his sophomore year he slacked off a bit, but received a contract with the Calgary Flames after his team was eliminated in the playoffs and played one more game for the farm team Saint John Flames in the AHL playoffs. But then he returned to Finland and played another good season with Espoo.
He then went back to North America, but was transferred from the Calgary Flames to the Tampa Bay Lightning in November 1999 . Although he came in the 1999/2000 season to 28 missions in the National Hockey League , but spent most of the season in the lower class International Hockey League with the farm teams Detroit Vipers and Long Beach Ice Dogs , where he should gain more experience. At the end of the season he was voted Rookie of the Year in the IHL . The 2000/01 season with the Detroit Vipers and showed there very good performances, so that he was appointed to the NHL squad of the Tampa Bay Lightning and there he was able to show what he can do and scored 20 points in 43 games.
In the summer of 2001, the Lightning transferred him to the New York Rangers , but after he had not received a place in the NHL squad, he returned to Sweden in the fall and played in the Elitserien for Djurgårdens IF . In the fall of 2002 he moved back to North America and played the 2002/03 season with the Rangers AHL farm team, the Hartford Wolf Pack . Ekman showed his skills, scoring 30 goals and 36 assists in 57 games. In August 2003 he was transferred to the San Jose Sharks , who gave Ekman a chance in the NHL, which he also used immediately. He played all games for the Sharks, scored 55 points and achieved a plus / minus rating of +35, which was a new record in the history of the Sharks and highlighted Ekmans very good defensive performances.
The 2004/05 NHL season fell out because of the lockout and Ekman spent the season at Djurgårdens IF. With 45 points in 44 games, he was the fifth best scorer in the league.
The 2005/06 season started poorly for the San Jose Sharks and Ekman, but after a superstar joined the team with Joe Thornton , things were looking up again. Together with Thornton and Jonathan Cheechoo , he formed the Sharks' best attack line. Thornton was the top scorer in the NHL at the end of the season , Cheechoo top scorer and Ekman achieved a personal record with 57 points.
In July 2006 he was transferred to the Pittsburgh Penguins , together with the German Patrick Ehelechner , for a second-round draft pick , where he scored a hat trick in a game at the start of the season in four minutes and ten seconds . From the end of December 2006 he could no longer be used because of an elbow injury.
His contract expired in the summer of 2007 and Ekman moved to Chimik Moskowskaja Oblast in the Russian Super League . He left the club after just one year and moved to league rivals SKA Saint Petersburg in the summer of 2008 . In the following two years he played for the SKA in the new continental hockey league , before he returned to Djurgårdens IF in late May 2010 and signed a three-year contract. In December 2010, he suffered a stroke , due to which he finally ended his career in August 2011.
