Career
The 1.83 m tall defender began his career with the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute team before he was signed as a free agent by the Atlanta Thrashers for the 1999/2000 season .
The right- handed shooter played his first game in the NHL during the 2000/01 season , in 2002 he moved to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for Shawn McEachern , until the 2005/06 season he was used, as in Atlanta, for most of the time in lower-class farm teams , only then did he make the leap into the NHL regular squad. In 2006, Brian Pothier was hired by the Capitals as a free agent. There he was used regularly in the following four seasons before he was transferred to the Carolina Hurricanes in March 2010 in a transfer business . After 20 games for the Hurricanes he left North America in July 2010 and signed a two-year contract with the Genève-Servette HC in the National League A .
After missing much of the 2008-09 season due to the aftereffects of a concussion , he suffered another concussion in March 2012. Due to the aftermath of this trauma, he completely missed the following two seasons and then ended his career. During the 2013-14 season, he began working as an unpaid assistant coach at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth from Division III of the National Collegiate Athletic Association .
