Sheldon Sharik Souray (born July 13, 1976 in Elk Point , Alberta ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played almost 800 games for the New Jersey Devils , Canadiens de Montréal , Edmonton Oilers , Dallas between 1992 and 2013 Stars and Anaheim Ducks in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . Souray was also nominated three times for the NHL All-Star Game and represented the national team of his home country at the 2005 World Cup .
Career
Souray first played in various youth teams until he was accepted in the 1992/93 season by the Tri-City Americans in the Canadian junior league Western Hockey League and completed his first two games for the team. After his first full season in the WHL, he was selected in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft by the New Jersey Devils in the third round in 71st position. The following year he completed mainly in Tri-City, but moved towards the end of the season for league rivals Prince George Cougars . In addition, there were his first appearances for the Albany River Rats in the American Hockey League , the farm team of the New Jersey Devils. His last year in the WHL he graduated in 1995/96, where he moved from the Prince George Cougars to the Kelowna Rockets during the season within the WHL . Further missions for Albany were also added. He had developed into a good defender in the WHL who could both score and accept the tough game. In his last season he achieved 54 points and 185 penalty minutes in a total of 59 games.
For the season 1996/97 Souray moved to the Albany River Rats in the AHL, where he spent the entire season before he came to his first use in the NHL for the Devils in the 1997/98 game year and was able to establish himself in the team. He played for New Jersey for two and a half years until he was transferred to the Montréal Canadiens in March 2000 together with Josh DeWolf for Vladimir Malachow and a draft pick . There the Canadian was repeatedly thrown back by injuries and was only able to play 86 of a possible 164 games in the 2000/01 and 2001/02 seasons . In the entire 2002/03 season he could not complete a single game because of a protracted hip injury.
He made his comeback in the 2003/04 season and finally his final breakthrough in the NHL. After collecting a maximum of eleven points per season in the previous years, this time it was 35. As a reward, he was invited to the NHL All-Star Game . Since the 2004/05 NHL season was completely canceled due to the lockout , the defender decided, like many NHL players, to move to Europe to play the season there. He signed a contract in the Swedish Elitserien with Färjestad BK . When the NHL resumed play in the fall of 2005, Souray returned to Montréal from Sweden. But at the beginning of the season, Souray faced allegations that he should have mistreated his wife Angelica Bridges , who was known, among other things, through appearances on the television series Baywatch . In the end there was no charge. Due to the allegations, he started the 2005/06 season weak, thereby gambled away his participation in the Olympic Winter Games in Turin , but was then able to improve in the last third of the season and bring about a conciliatory end to the season. Souray saved his good form into the 2006/07 game year and set career records in all offensive categories. He finished the season with a total of 64 points just behind Scott Niedermayer and with his 26 goals he clearly led all defenders.
After the season, he signed a $ 27 million five-year contract with the Edmonton Oilers as a free agent . However, a persistent shoulder injury forced him to take breaks again and again during the season, which meant that he had only played 26 games by mid-February when he underwent an operation. In the 2008/09 season, the defender justified the lavish contract and scored 53 points in 81 games. The hopes of the Oilers management that Souray should lead the team, which is currently being rebuilt, with his experience, were dashed after just three games in the 2009/10 season . Souray suffered a concussion on October 8, 2009 after a check by Jarome Iginla , which - like a broken hand - limited him to 37 appearances during the season. He posted 13 points scorer. Since the team had fallen far short of sporting expectations in the three years since Souray was signed, the Canadian asked for a change during the 2010 summer break. However, there was no interested party, whereupon the Oilers put him on the waiver list. Since no team from there was ready to sign Souray, Edmonton sent him on loan to the Hershey Bears in the American Hockey League , the actual farm team of the Washington Capitals . The defender spent the 2010/11 season there . In February 2011 he was put on the waiver list again, as the Oilers hoped to find a new NHL club for Souray before the trade deadline . However, there was no buyer, although the new club would only have had to pay half of the salary.
On July 1, 2011, Souray signed a one-year contract with the Dallas Stars . After a season in Dallas, he signed a three-year contract with the Anaheim Ducks . At the Ducks, however, the Canadian only played one season before he didn't play a single competitive game in two seasons due to a wrist injury and then ended his active career in July 2015.
International
Souray only played for the Canadian national team at the 2005 World Cup in Austria . There he won the silver medal with the team after the Canadians clearly defeated the Czechs with 0: 3 in the final . Souray contributed two scorer points, including one goal, in nine tournament games.
