Michael Commodore (born November 7, 1979 in Fort Saskatchewan , Alberta ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who was last under contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning in the National Hockey League .
Career
The 1.95 m tall defender first played for the team of the University of North Dakota in the league operation of the National Collegiate Athletic Association before he was selected ( drafted ) in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft as 42nd in the second round of the New Jersey Devils .
After his college days, the right-handed shooter completed his first NHL games for the Devils in the 2001/02 season , he was also on the ice with the farm team Albany River Rats in the American Hockey League . Due to his strong defensive play in the 2004 Stanley Cup play-offs and his red Afro hairstyle , which is atypical for ice hockey players , he quickly became a crowd favorite, so that the Afro soon achieved cult status among Devils supporters. Nevertheless, Commodore was transferred to the Carolina Hurricanes for the 2005/06 season , where he increased his popularity even further by making a white bathrobe, which was in stark contrast to his hairstyle, his trademark.
During the 2004/05 lockout , the Canadian hit the headlines when he said he would play if the so-called salary cap was introduced , if that led to the end of the dispute. Contrary to many other players, Commodore never changed this opinion. In the 2005/06 season , Commodore played a key role in the first Stanley Cup victory in the history of the Hurricanes, after which he even shaved his red curly hair in favor of an organization for breast cancer patients .
The 2006/07 season did not go as desired and Carolina could not qualify for the playoffs. In May 2007 he was able to celebrate a new success when he became ice hockey world champion. In February 2008, Commodore was transferred from Carolina to the Ottawa Senators , who let him move to the Columbus Blue Jackets as a free agent in the summer .
On July 1, 2011, Commodore signed a one-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings , who transferred him to the Tampa Bay Lightning on February 27, 2012 in exchange for a performance-related seven-round vote in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft .
The defender has also gained experience in the music industry: Together with his former colleague Rhett Warrener , Mike Commodore played the role of a truck driver in the music video for the song Convoy by Paul Brandt .
