Since 2017 he has been employed as Director of Player Development for his former team New York Rangers.
Career
Ortmeyer began his career with the Omaha Lancers in the United States Hockey League , for which he was active between 1997 and 1999. In his rookie year , he collected 48 points scorer in 54 matches. This gave him both the choice in the All-Rookie Team and Second All-Star Team of the league. He also won the Clark Cup , the USHL championship trophy, with the team this season . In the following season, the right winger increased his point yield to 59. However, further successes both personally and with the team did not materialize. In the summer of 1999 Ortmeyer began studying at the University of Michigan , for whose ice hockey team he played in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association , over the next four years . The striker won two CCHA championships with the university during this period - in 2000 and 2002 - and received numerous personal awards, including being named the division's best defensive striker and most valuable player in the 2003 championship final.
Ungedraftet Ortmeyer was after finishing his last season at the College on 10 May 2003 by the National Hockey League - Franchise of the New York Rangers contracted. During the pre-season training camp in autumn 2003, the winger made it straight to the Rangers squad. Ultimately, the rookie played 58 games for New York in the 2003/04 season and scored six points despite his defensive approach. He also played in 13 games for the Hartford Wolf Pack , the American Hockey League - Rangers' farm team . The American also spent the entire 2004/05 season there , as the NHL season fell victim to the lockout . With appearances in 61 matches, the defensive specialist gained further experience and match practice in the professional field. From the 2005/06 season he was again a permanent member of the team from the “ Big Apple ” for the next two years . However, from mid-September 2006 Ortmeyer missed a large part of the 2006/07 season due to a pulmonary embolism and played some games for Hartford in the AHL to build up his form. Between the end of the lockout and the expiry of his contract in the summer of 2007, the striker played 119 games for the Rangers in the regular season and 13 in the playoffs. Despite the embolism that had limited him to 41 missions in the 2006/07 season, he collected eleven points there, the most in the three seasons for New York.
As a free agent , Ortmeyer was signed on July 2, 2007 by the Nashville Predators . In his first season with the team from the state of Tennessee Ortmeyer was part of the NHL regular squad, but only played 51 games due to a knee injury with subsequent surgery. Overall, he was out between late February and early December 2008 for 48 games including the summer break. Then the coaching staff appointed him to the roster of Nashville's AHL farm team, the Milwaukee Admirals . Ortmeyer spent there, with the exception of a two-game stay in the NHL team in April 2009, the rest of the season and thereby filled the post of assistant captain. Since the expiring contract was not extended by the Nashville Predators, he accepted an offer from the San Jose Sharks with a term of one year on July 16, 2009 .
In January 2011 he was signed by the Minnesota Wild , who initially sent him to the farm team for the Houston Eros in the AHL. In the following years he regularly commuted between the Minnesota Wild and their AHL farm team. After the striker's contract had expired in summer 2012, Ortmeyer only found a new employer in January 2013 in the Missouri Mavericks from the Central Hockey League . However, he completed only two games for the team before he was committed by the San Antonio Rampage from the AHL. There he ended his active career in the summer of 2014 shortly before his 36th birthday.
Before the 2017/18 season , Ortmeyer was hired by his former New York Rangers team as Director of Player Development .
