Emzarios Bedinidis (also: Betinidis , Greek Εμζάριος Μπε (ν) τινίδης , actually Georgian ემზარ ბედინეიშვილი , Emzar Bedineishwili ; born August 16, 1975 in Tbilisi ) is a former Georgian or Greek wrestler . He was European lightweight free style champion in 2000 and a three-time Olympic participant.

Career

Emzarios Bentinidis was born in Tbilisi as Emzar Bedineishvili. Under his maiden name, he began wrestling as a teenager in Tbilisi in 1989. He concentrated on the free style. His trainer there was Tengiz Gambashidze.

His international career began in 1995. He started for Georgia up to and including 2001 . He then went to Greece , took the name Emzarios Bentinidis and, after a two-year ban, fought for this country at international championships from 2004. He was trained there by Georgios Athanasiadis and Panagiotis Koutsabakis. Emzarios Bentinidis earned his living by wrestling. He was and is also active in the German Bundesliga and wrestled for VfK Schifferstadt and KSV Aalen , for which he took to the mat in 2009.

At his first start at an international championship, the Junior World Championship in Tehran , he just missed a medal in the weight class up to 60 kg with a 4th place. In the seniors he started in 1996 at the European Championships in Budapest , but only came in 9th place in the lightweight. He also achieved this place in the lightweight at the 1997 European Championships in Warsaw . He lost against Adam Saitijew from Russia and Zaza Zarzirow from Ukraine , but came under. a. to a victory over Andreas Zabel from Germany . At the World Championships in 1996 and 1997 he was not used by the Georgian Wrestling Federation, which had a large selection of excellent athletes.

At the European Championships in 1998 in Bratislava , Emzar Bedineishvili competed in a number of good fights in the lightweight and came to four wins. In the decisive battles for a medal, however, he had to accept defeats against Zaza Zazirow and Welichan Alachwerdijew from Russia and only achieved 4th place without a medal. At the world championship this year in Tehran , he came back to four wins. However, defeats against Igor Kupejew from Uzbekistan and Daniel Igali from Canada threw him back to 6th place.

At the European Championships in Minsk in 1999 he won his first medal. He won the lightweight over Juha Lappalainen from Finland , Mario Hartmann from Austria and Janos Forizs from Hungary , before losing to Welichan Alachwerdijew in the semifinals . With a victory over Sergei Demtschenko from Belarus, he then won an EM bronze medal . In the same year he also started at the CISM military world championship in Zagreb in the welterweight division and met in the final battle for the first time on the exceptional Russian wrestler Buwaissar Saitijew , against whom he lost on points. He did very well at the 1999 World Championships in Ankara in the lightweight. He defeated four tough opponents there, Sergei Demtschenko, Yüksel Sanli from Turkey , Jens Gündling from Germany and Yosvany Sánchez Larrudet from Cuba , before losing to Daniel Igali in the semi-finals . In the fight for the world championship bronze medal, he had to play again against Yüksel Sanli, whom he had defeated in the preliminary round with 11: 1 technical points, and lost this fight somewhat demotivated with 0: 3 technical points. He was fourth.

At the European Championships in Budapest in 2000 , Emzaris Bedineshvili finally won a title. He defeated the lightweight Roman Motrovich from Ukraine , Ischak Bosijew from Russia , Ahmet Gülhan from Turkey, Nikolai Paslar from Bulgaria and Sergei Demtschenko and became European champion. As a co-favorite, he therefore competed at the Olympic Games in Sydney . But these games were all the more disappointing for him, because he lost to Amir Tavakolian from Iran and to his feared opponent Daniel Igali , so he was eliminated after the 2nd round and only ended up in 17th place.

After overcoming this shock, he competed for Georgia for the last time in 2001 at the World Cup in Sofia . After three victorious fights he failed there against the local Nikolai Paslar and came in 6th place in the lightweight.

After moving to Greece and the two-year ban, he started in 2004 for the first time under the name Emzarios Bentinidis at the European Championships in Ankara. He came here in welterweight with victories over Semih Arslan from Belgium , Alexander Leipold from Germany and Nikolai Paslar in the semifinals, in which he lost against Ruslan Kokajew from Russia. He won the fight for 3rd place against Krystian Brzozowski from Poland . At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens , however, he had no luck. He won in the first round against the two-time European champion Árpád Ritter from Hungary on points, but then lost to Buwaissar Saitijew and only finished 10th.

Also in 2006 Emzarios Bentinidis delivered good fights both at the European Championships in Moscow and at the World Championships in Guangzhou . He defeated u. a. again Nikolai Paslar , Peter Weisenberger from Germany and the strong Chinese Si Riguleng . He was beaten in Moscow by Buwaissar Saitijew and in Guangzhou by Murad Gaidarow from Belarus. Therefore he finished 7th in both championships.

At the 2007 European Championships in Sofia , he won his next welterweight medal. He won there u. a. about the former vice-world champion Ibragim Aldatow from Ukraine, Krystian Brzozowski from Poland a. Ruslan Kokajew from Russia. A title win prevented his defeat in the semifinals against Gela Saghirashvili from Georgia. The 2007 World Championships in Baku were not quite as successful for him. He lost there in the quarterfinals against Tschamsulwara Tschamsulwarajew from Azerbaijan . Since this did not reach the final battle, he was eliminated and finished in 10th place.

Even in his last year of competition in 2008, he did not go without a medal at the international championships. He fought for an EM bronze medal again at the European Championships in Tampere . After a defeat in the semi-finals against Murad Gaidarow from Ukraine, a victory over Krystian Brzozowski earned him this medal. In his third participation in the Olympic Games, he was again without a medal in Beijing . After winning a fight against Matthew Gentry from Canada , he lost to Soslan Tigijew from Uzbekistan and Ştefan Gheorghiţă from Romania and only came in 9th place.
