Geandry Garzón Caballero (born November 5, 1983 in Santiago de Cuba ) is a Cuban wrestler . Vice- world champion 2007 in free style in lightweight.

Career

Geandrey Garzón Caballero was discovered by talent scouts in childhood and made to wrestle. He has been practicing this sport since 1993. After becoming Cuban freestyle champion several times as a junior, he was delegated to the top club Cerro Pelado Havana . There he is trained by Filiberto Alberto Delyada and Julio Cesar Castellano. The 1.73 m tall athlete weighs around 70 kg and is modeled on Raul Cascaret Fonseca , a former Cuban wrestler world champion. As a junior, Geandry Garzón Caballero still wrestled in both styles, but since 2003 he has concentrated fully on the free style. He has no other profession besides wrestling.

At the Pan American Junior Championships in 2002 in Bogotá , he started in the lightweight in both styles. In Greco-Roman In style he won ahead of James Woodall from the United States and Francisco Ceveda from Mexico and in free style he came in second behind James Woodall and ahead of Roberto Piedra from Colombia.

In 2003 Geandry Garzón Caballero became Junior World Champion in Istanbul in free style. It took him six wins. In the final he defeated Suren Markosjan from Armenia .

In 2004 he failed to qualify for the Cuban Olympic team. His next start at an international championship was therefore not held until 2005 at the Pan American Championships in Guatemala City . In the lightweight, free style, he won ahead of Edison Hurtado Lerma from Colombia and Ron Tarquino from the United States. At this year's World Championships in Budapest he had to contest six tough fights in one day before he was sure of winning the bronze medal . He successively defeated Zhirayr Hovannesjan from Armenia, Albert Batirow from Belarus , Bujandschawyn Batdsorig from Mongolia and others. Kazuhiko Ikematsu from Japan. In the semifinals he suffered a defeat against Makhach Murtasalijew from Russia . In the battle for 3rd place, he defeated Viktor Bilokoputrin from Ukraine.

In 2006 Geandry Garzón Caballero competed in a World Cup tournament in Sari / Iran and came in third behind Ugur Cadir from Turkey and ahead of Hassan Salman Tahmasebi from Iran. At the World Championships this year in Guangzhou, China, he again won the bronze medal in the lightweight. He won his first fight against Jin Kyuk-Baek from Korea and lost in his second against Bill Zadick from the United States. Since Bill Zadick became world champion , he was able to fight on in the hope round and secured 3rd place with victories over Elar Hani from Estonia , Fred Jessey from Nigeria and Albert Batirow.

In 2007 Geandry Garzón Caballero won both the Pan American Championships in San Salvador and the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro in the lightweight. In San Salvador in front of Ricardo Roberty from Venezuela , Bill Zadick u. Chris Prickett from Canada and in Rio de Janeiro ahead of Edison Hurtado Lerma, Doug Schwab from the United States and Pedro Soto Cordero from Puerto Rico . At the subsequent World Cup in Baku , Geandry Garzón Caballero achieved the greatest success of his career to date by winning the runner-up world title. On the way there he defeated Hishan Al Thaalebi from Iraq , Bujandschawyn Batdsorig from Mongolia, Doug Schwab and Otar Tushuschwili from Georgia . In the final he was defeated by the Turkish Ramazan Şahin just on points.

In 2008 Geandry Garzón Caballero won the Pan American Championships again in Colorado Springs ahead of Haiston Garcia from Canada, Ricardo Hurtado Lerma u. Chris Bono from the United States. The competition at the Olympic Games in Beijing did not start well for him. He met world champion Ramazan Sahin in his first fight, to whom he again lost on points. Since Sahin became Olympic champion , he was able to continue in the hope round and won against Mehdi Taghavi Karmani from Iran. But then he lost to Otar Tushvili. He did not reach the medal fights and ended up on the 5th place.
