Phil Vassar
Phil Vassar (born May 28, 1964 in Lynchburg , Virginia ) is an American country singer and songwriter . His greatest successes as a singer were Just Another Day in Paradise in 2000 and In a Real Love in 2004.
Career
Phil Vassar grew up as the son of a steakhouse owner in Lynchburg , Virginia . He received a scholarship from James Madison University , where he first completed a degree in business administration , while in his spare time he played the piano and performed in clubs as a singer.
After graduation, Vassar moved to Nashville , where he and a friend opened an Italian restaurant called Nathan’s in the suburbs in 1995 , which regularly played live music. Vassar performed in his restaurant himself and sang his own and cover songs. The son of the singer Engelbert heard him , who gave his father a demo tape of Vassar. In 1996 Engelbert recorded Vassar's song Once in a While ; A short time later, Vassar was able to sign a contract as a songwriter at EMI . In the following years , Vassar wrote chart hits for various colleagues such as Tim McGraw ( For a Little While , My Next Thirty Years ), Jo Dee Messina ( Bye, Bye , I'm Alright ), Collin Raye ( Little Red Rodeo ) and Alan Jackson ( Right on the money ).
In 1998 Vassar got a recording contract as a singer with Arista Nashville . In 1999 he was named "Country Songwriter of the Year" by ASCAP . His debut album Phil Vassar , released in spring 2000, contained only his own material; five of them made it to the top 20 of the US country charts, including the No. 1 hit Just Another Day in Paradise .
In 2002, the album was followed by American Child , 2004 Shaken Not Stirred (with the No. 1 hit in a Real Love ) and 2006 1 Greatest Hits, Vol. . Vassars then changed labels; his next album Prayer of a Common Man was released in 2008 on Universal South Records .
Private life
From 2002 to 2007 Vassar was married to Julie Wood, who co-wrote some of his songs. She is the sister of country singer Jeff Wood, who also wrote songs for his albums with Vassar. Vassar has two daughters.
