Hans Schröder (art historian)

Hans Schröder (born July 13, 1887 in Rendsburg , † January 19, 1954 in Lübeck ) was a German art historian and museum director.

Life

Hans Friedrich Johann Schröder was born in Rendsburg on July 13, 1887 and baptized there on August 7, 1887. His parents were the Lüneburg load master Johann Christian Schröder and his wife Friederike Marie Sophie Luise nee. Wendt. In 1918 he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and took drawing lessons from Hermann Groeber . Schröder received his doctorate as an art historian in Hamburg on the Lüneburg Council Silver (in the holdings of the Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin ). He was initially custodian at the Museum of Hamburg History until May 30, 1934. He was appointed as a professor by the National Socialists in the course of conformity with effect from June 1, 1934 as museum director of the museums of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck and was as such until his dismissal the British Military Government on January 8, 1946. During this time he was particularly interested in the Greveraden altarpiece by Hans Memling . During this time he also determined the activities of the Overbeck Society , the local art association. His successor as museum director in Lübeck was Hans Arnold Gräbke .

During the Second World War Schröder was apparently active in the German art protection department in Russia. His further life has not yet been determined.
