Hartwig Beseler (born March 20, 1920 in Verden (Aller) ; † March 24, 2005 ) was a German art historian , monument conservator and state curator of Schleswig-Holstein from 1963 to 1985 .

Life

Hartwig Beseler, who spent his childhood and school days in Kiel , began studying art history , history and archeology at the Philipps University of Marburg in the late 1930s . In 1940/41 he took part in the art protection campaign of the photo archive Photo Marburg in occupied France as a photographer . Beseler then continued his studies in Kiel and Munich and , after an interruption due to military service and injuries, received his doctorate in 1946 from Hans Jantzen in Munich on the building history of the Hildesheim Church of St. Michael .

This was followed by employment as a research assistant in Frankfurt am Main and Bonn , where in 1952 he was given the opportunity to coordinate the reconstruction measures of the destroyed churches in Cologne in the office of the Rhineland State Conservator . Until 1963 he worked as an area officer at the Rhenish Office for Monument Preservation in Bonn and then moved to Kiel to head the State Office for Monument Preservation Schleswig-Holstein until 1985.

In addition to his work in Kiel, Hartwig Beseler was represented on numerous boards and committees, including the Association of German Art Historians , the Association of State Monument Preservationists , the Planning Advisory Board of the Berlin Building and Housing Sector of the German National Committee for Monument Protection and the Expert Advisory Board of the " National Valuable Cultural Monuments " program of the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media . In 1974 he was appointed to the “Historic Town Centers” working group of the German UNESCO Commission . In 1986, Beseler received the City of Kiel's Culture Prize in recognition of his work for the protection of monuments .

Working for the preservation of monuments

During his years in Kiel, Beseler reorganized and modernized the preservation of monuments, which he saw as a cross-generational task. He expanded the focus from the historically significant individual buildings to more recent buildings and ensembles. It was important to him to convey the monument preservation content and activities to the public, which he accompanied with numerous publications.

In September 2011, the Schleswig-Holstein Monument Fund awarded the “Hartwig Beseler Prize”, endowed with 1000 euros, for the first time in order to honor people who have committed themselves to the preservation and protection of monuments in the spirit of Beselers. The first prize winner was the architect Horst von Bassewitz .
