Hans-Joachim Mrusek

Hans-Joachim Mrusek (born June 7, 1920 in Meißen ; † March 9, 1994 in Halle / Saale ) was a German art historian.

Life

After attending primary school in Meißen and Dresden, Hans-Joachim Mrusek first learned a trade , then went to sea and was drafted into the Wehrmacht in World War II . After returning from the war, he worked in museums in Pillnitz , Dresden and Meißen . After passing a gifted test in Leipzig , he studied at the Martin Luther University in HalleHistory of Art, Classical Archeology, History and Egyptology. In 1953 he began working at the university, initially as a research assistant at the Art History Institute, from 1959 as a lecturer and acting director, and since 1963 as professor and director of the Art History Institute. From 1969 to 1985 as head of the then art history department.

Hans-Joachim Mrusek's scientific work focused primarily on medieval secular architecture , in particular on castle research. With the results of this research, Hans-Joachim Mrusek presented his dissertation on urban development in Magdeburg in the High Middle Ages in 1953 and the habilitation thesis on the design and function of self-fortification in the Middle Ages in 1958 . With the work The function and historical development of Castle Giebichenstein in Halle (Saale) and its position in early and highly feudal castle construction , he received his doctorate in engineering in 1970 at the University of Architecture and Building in Weimar (today Bauhaus University Weimar ) .

He also gained importance through his many years of lecturing on art and building history at the University of Halle and temporarily at the universities in Magdeburg and Merseburg . In the lectures and especially on excursions, he conveyed both art-historical and general knowledge and a particular sensitivity for the traditional architectural and art monuments in their historical, urban and landscape surroundings.

In 1966 he was awarded the Handel Prize of the Halle district .
