Life

From 1972 to 1979 Woller studied Bavarian history, modern history, German literature and political science at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . After receiving his doctorate in 1979 with the thesis "The Loritz Party: History, Structure and Politics of the Economic Development Association (WAV) 1945–1955" , he was a research assistant at the Institute for Contemporary History from 1980 . In 1985 he spent three years at the German Historical Institute in Rome . After returning to the Institute for Contemporary History in 1988, he worked, among other things, for the series of quarterly journals for contemporary history . From 1994, when he took over from Hermann Graml , until 2015 he was editor-in-chief of the Vierteljahrshefte; Jürgen Zarusky was his successor .

In addition, Woller is a specialist in German and, in particular, Italian contemporary history, which, in addition to numerous publications, is also expressed in his appointment to the German-Italian Commission of Historians (2009–2012).

Woller appears as a regular writer of reviews for the online journal sehepunkte ; He mainly discusses titles on Italian history in the 20th century. During his time as editor-in-chief of the Vierteljahreshefte he himself published articles on the history of fascist Italy in the magazine . Rainer Behring called Woller's History of Italy in the 20th Century , published in 2010, “an excellent synthesis that bundles the state of German, Italian and Anglo-American research” and also “sets its own accents and presents its own interpretations”; the book will "easily advance to a standard work".
