Ivan Schawow , Bulgarian Иван Шавов , (born September 17, 1943 in Gorno Jabalkowo , Burgas Oblast ) is a former Bulgarian wrestler . He was the 1970 European bantamweight free style champion .

Career

Ivan Schawow was a member of the army and started for the central sports club of the Bulgarian army CSKA Sofia . However, he started his career at the Veliko Tarnovo sports club . His coach was his father, Konstantin Schawow. At the beginning of his career, Ivan Schawow started in both styles, Greco-Roman style and free style, but from 1968 only in free style. He always started in bantamweight, the weight class that had its weight limit of 57 kg at the time.

Ivan Schawow made his debut at an international championship in 1966 at the World Championships in Toledo (Ohio) in free style. After three wins he wrestled there against Fred Powell from the United States and was defeated by Hasan Sevinc from Turkey on points and thus just missed a medal with 4th place.

In 1967 Ivan Schawow was used at the European Championships in Minsk in the Greco-Roman style. After two wins he wrestled in Minsk against the German ex-world champion Fritz Stange , but then lost to Rustem Kasakow from the USSR and Hartmut Puls from the GDR and came in 4th place. He did not do any other starts in the Greco-Roman style.

In 1968 he competed at the European Championships in Skopje . In the preliminary rounds he won it u. a. about the two German starters Karl Dodrimont from the FRG and Horst Mayer from the GDR . In the finals he wrestled against Ali Aliyev from the USSR and won on points over Zbigniew Żedzicki from Poland . But since Aliyev Zedzicki had shouldered, this European champion and Ivan Schawow vice-European champion. At the Olympic Games in Mexico City this year , Ivan Schawow initially achieved four victories. In his fifth fight he fought against Hasan Sevinc from Turkey and was defeated in his sixth fight against Donald Behm from the United States. He finished 5th.

At the 1969 World Cup in Mar del Plata , Argentina , Ivan Schawow only won over Paul Neff from Germany. He fought a draw against Donald Behm and lost against the Japanese Tadamichi Tanaka. With these results he came in 6th place in bantamweight. In 1970 he had a great success, because he became European bantamweight champion in Berlin (East). He defeated such strong wrestlers like László Klinga from Hungary , Zbigniew Żedzicki and Hasan Karaman from Turkey. In the final, a draw against the Soviet athlete Pawel Maljan was enough for him to win the title. Despite this success, he was not used at the 1970 World Cup.

His next start at an international championship was again in 1972. Here he took 2nd place in the bantamweight division in Katowice . In the decisive fight he was defeated by the Soviet athlete Ivan Kuleschow . He then won against this Kuleschow at the Olympic Games in Munich . After he had won three more fights, he lost to Richard Sanders from the United States and Hideaki Yanagida from Japan each on points and thus reached 5th place as four years ago.
