Zbigniew Żedzicki (born June 28, 1945 in Alfeld (Leine) , British Occupation Zone ) is a former Polish wrestler . He won three bronze bantamweight medals at European free style championships and competed for Poland three times at the Olympic Games.

Career

Zbigniew Żedzicki, who was born in Germany during the war and post-war events, returned to Poland with his family as part of the repatriation. There he started wrestling as a teenager. After his first major successes in the national field, he joined the Polish People's Army and started for the army sports club Gornik Wesola . He wrestled exclusively in free style and throughout his career in bantamweight, the weight class that had its weight limit of 57 kg at the time.

At the age of 22, his international career began at the 1967 European Championships in Istanbul . He finished there with two wins, including one over the German champion Franz Tempes , and two defeats, a very good fifth place. At the European Championships in the 1968 Olympic year in Skopje , Zbigniew Żedzicki won the first medal. He won a bronze medal there . Against Ivan Schawow from Bulgaria and the multiple world champion Ali Alijew from the Soviet Union , however, he had no chance in the final battles. At the Olympic Games in Mexico City he got three victories. But he lost again to Ivan Schawow and the Japanese wrestler Yōjirō Uetake , who had also outclassed Ali Aliyev and achieved a good placement with sixth place.

Poland did not send a team to the 1969 World Cup in Mar del Plata . Therefore, Zbigniew Żedzicki was only at the start at the European Championships in Sofia this year . He won there only over Horst Mayer from the GDR and had to retire after defeats against Mehmet Esenceli from Turkey and Pawel Maljan from the USSR and came in 7th place.

In 1970 he missed both at the European Championships in Berlin (East) and at the World Championships in Edmonton with fourth place each just a medal. In Sofia he defeated u. a. László Klinga from Hungary and in Edmonton Donald Behm from the United States and again László Klinga. He suffered defeats in Edmonton from Jancho Patrikow from Bulgaria and Hideaki Yanagida from Japan.

After a 5th place at the World Championships in Sofia in 1971, where he lost to Jancho Patrikow and Donald Behm , Zbigniew Żedzicki won a bronze medal again at the 1972 European Championships in Katowice . He won there u. a. about Eduard Giray from the FRG . At the Olympic Games this year in Munich he achieved two wins, but defeats against Iwan Schawow from Bulgaria and Hideaki Yanagida from Japan threw him back to 10th place.

In 1973 he came in 5th place at the European Championships in Lausanne , but he did not win at the 1973 World Championships in Tehran . After a draw against László Klinga and a defeat against Kirkor Leonow from Bulgaria, he only came in 11th place. 1974 Zbigniew Żedzicki was not at the start of the European Championship and the World Championship. At the European Championships in Karlsruhe in 1975 , he then won his third bronze medal with four wins. At the World Cup in 1975 he lost to a victory over the Greeks Giorgios Hatzioannidis against Vladimir Jumin from the USSR and Masao Arai from Japan and came in 7th place.

The last major international championship in which Zbigniew Żedzicki participated was the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal , the third in which he participated. But it could not take this last chance to win an Olympic medal, because after a victory over the American Joe Corso he lost to Miho Dukow from Bulgaria and Li Ho-Pyonk from North Korea and ended up in 8th place .

After the 1976 Olympics, he resigned. Nothing is known about his further life.
