Hartmut Walravens

Hartmut Walravens (* 1944 ) is a German sinologist and librarian . He worked at the Berlin State Library .

Life

Walravens studied Sinology, Mandatory Law and Ethnology in Cologne and Bonn. In 1970 he received his doctorate with the dissertation The German Knowledge of the Chinese (until 1870) . He then began working in the library service as a specialist in social sciences at the library of the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Hamburg .

From 1986 to 2007 he headed the supraregional bibliographic services department of the Berlin State Library, and from 1987 onwards under the official title of Head Library Director at the State Library in Berlin, Prussian Cultural Heritage. In this role he was responsible for the magazine database (ZDB), the International ISBN Agency and, from 1993, for the International ISMN Agency. As an employee of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions , he was responsible for newspaper and magazine work as well as the worldwide organization of newspaper conferences.

At the University of Hamburg he gave seminars for the language and culture of China as a lecturer until 1986 . He also taught at the Japan Center at the Humboldt University in Berlin . His main research interests include bibliography , the history of books and printing, mandate law, the history of science and the cultural history of the Qing period. In 2001 he completed his habilitation in the Department of Cultural Studies at the Free University of Berlin . There he taught until 2007 as a private lecturer in the field of sinologist Erling von Mende at the East Asian seminar.

In 2013 he was awarded the Indiana University Prize for Altaic Studies.
