The Parque Nacional Natural El Tuparro is a Colombian natural park founded in 1970 . It is located in the eastern part of the Colombian Llanos in the Vichada Department and extends over 548,000 hectares . Its height profile ranges from 100 m to a height of 330 m above sea level. The temperatures are around 27 ° C. The landscape is shaped by the savannahs, which make up around 85%, of the alluvial and gallery forests that stretch along the rivers . One of the first 'tourists' in the area was Alexander von Humboldt , who, like Jules Verne in the book The proud Orinoco , was impressed by the Raudal of Maipures. Since 1993, the Park is on the UNESCO - World Heritage Site - ' Tentative List ' of Colombia.

Hydrography

Located in the Orinoco basin , the rivers Tomo and the eponymous Tuparro cross the park area. The sometimes strongly meandering rivers form lagoons again and again .

fauna and Flora

The Buriti palm and Caraipa llanorum in the wooded moor areas are typical of the flora of the park . The dry savannas, on the other hand, tend to fire and are overgrown with grass. The park is home to 74 species of mammals, 320 birds , 17 reptiles , 26 fish and five primate species . The animal species include giant armadillos and tapirs , small savannah armadillos, pumas and jaguars, but also crocodiles and turtles can be found in ponds and lakes. Those who visit the park can stay in hotels or campsites. The avifauna are characterized in particular by the species of the Hokkohühner and various eagle species .

Indigenous culture

Around 10,000 people live in the park area in a few larger indigenous ethnic groups . While the Guahíbo tribe is still seminomadic today, the others are sedentary.
