Career

Bjarne Ansbol grew up in Ballerup near Copenhagen and started wrestling with the local athletes' club (AK) DAN . He concentrated entirely on the Greco-Roman style. His first major success was winning the 1958 Danish middleweight championship .

In 1958 he started the welterweight championship in Budapest . After defeating Nikolaos Timonidis from Greece, he then lost to Valeriu Bularca from Romania and Werner Hoppe from Germany. He was eliminated and finally finished 13th. In December of the same year he wrestled in the Danish national relay in two international matches against Czechoslovakia in Prague and in Hodonin / Moravia. In Prague he came here in the welterweight division against Brejcha from Pilsen to a point win and in Hodonin he wrestled against the same opponent in a draw.

In 1960 he qualified for participation in the Olympic Games in Rome . He started there in the welterweight division. In his first fight he lost to ex-world champion Grigori Gamarnik from the Soviet Union, then he fought against Sachihiko Takeda from Japan, defeated Valeriu Bularca, who was third in the 1958 World Cup, and lost to Günther Maritschnigg from Germany. He finished 9th.

In 1962 Bjarne Ansbol competed at the World Championships in Toledo (USA). There he was fighting again in the welterweight division, the limit of which had been raised from 73 kg to 78 kg after a weight class reform by the FILA. He fought a draw in Toledo in his first fight against Georg Utz from Germany, then defeated Sadao Kazama from Japan and Rudy Williams from the United States, then fought against Dimitar Dobrew from Bulgaria, defeated Yavuz Selekman from Turkey and only lost in the final against Anatoly Kolessow from the Soviet Union. He became vice world champion.

In the following years he could no longer build on this great success. At the 1963 World Championships in Helsingborg, Sweden, he came in 7th place in welterweight, at the 1966 European Championships in Essen he reached 8th place in middleweight and at the 1967 World Championships in Bucharest he came in 17th place in welterweight.
