Career
Gunnar Glans grew up in Malmö and started wrestling there. He belonged to the sports club IK Sparta Malmö . Since 1930 he belonged to the Swedish elite of wrestlers in Greco-Roman. Style, first lightweight, then welterweight.
In 1931 he became the first Swedish welterweight champion. He then represented his country at the European Championships in Prague . There he won against Tesdorf Jörgensen from Denmark , Ludwig Sesta from Austria and Alois Samec from Czechoslovakia . Against Mikko Nordling from Finland he suffered a defeat and finished in 3rd place.
In 1932 he was not a member of the Swedish team at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles . The main reason for this was that Sweden did not send a full team to these games because of the high costs.
At the European Championships in Helsinki in 1933 he was back in the welterweight division and finished second after victories over Oswald Möchel , Germany and Sandor Finyak from Hungary and defeats to Albert Kusnets from Estonia and again Mikko Nordling.
At the European Championships in Rome in 1934 , however, he could no longer be stopped. He landed five victories in a row and with victories in the decisive fights over Fritz Schäfer from Germany and Mikko Nordling became European welterweight champion in Greco-Roman. Style.
From 1935 he received a competitor in Sweden in Rudolf Svedberg whom he could not defeat. Therefore, from 1935 onwards, he was no longer involved in international championships. Even at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin , where Rudolf Svedberg won the gold medal in welterweight, he was no longer there.
Gunnar Glans also competed against Germany several times in his career. In 1932 he lost in Stockholm in the lightweight against Eduard Sperling from Dortmund on points. In 1933 he lost in Cologne in the welterweight division against Oswald Möchel from Cologne-Mülheim on points. In a double international match in Stockholm in 1939, he won the welterweight division against Wolfgang Ehrl from Munich on points and lost to Fritz Schäfer from Ludwigshafen am Rhein with the same result.
Gunnar Glans died on August 24, 2008 in Malmö. So it is almost 100 years old. He was the last survivor of the 1920s and 1930s, which were so glorious for Swedish wrestlers.
