Shelby Wilson

Shelby Autrie Wilson (born July 14, 1937 in Ponca City , Oklahoma ) is a retired American wrestler .

Career

Shelby Wilson began wrestling as a high school wrestler in his hometown. He was already very successful at this. These successes continued at Oklahoma State University , which he then attended. He won two NCAA (American University Sports Association) "All American Championships" in freestyle wrestling (featherweight). At the NCAA championships of the state of Oklahoma, he took second place twice. In 1960 he surprisingly succeeded in asserting himself in the US Olympic elimination of the AAU (American Athletes Union) in the lightweight category, whereupon he was sent to the Olympic Games in Rome . In Rome he wrestled an outstanding tournament in the lightweight. He achieved five sovereign points wins and also beat the multiple Soviet championVladimir Sinyawski sure. He became Olympic champion without having ever competed in an international wrestling tournament. Wilson, Terrence McCann and Douglas Blubaugh were the three American US boys in Rome who became Olympic champions as athletes who were completely unknown in the rest of the wrestling world and who dominated the European and Asian freestyle elite. Like Terry McCann and Douglas Blubaugh, Shelby Wilson never took part in a world championship before or after his Olympic victory.

After his Olympic victory, he ended his career as an active wrestler and worked as a wrestling trainer at several universities before he took a job at a Christian youth organization, the Stronghold Youth Foundation , and as a trainer at Owen Valley High School in Spencer when he was six to twelve years old Adolescents works.
