Samuel Elias ("Dutch Sam")

Samuel Elias (called Dutch Elias or Dutch Sam ) ( April 4, 1775 - July 3, 1816 ) was a famous Anglo-Jewish boxer from the bare knuckle period.

At a height of about 1.70 meters (5'6½), Elias' maximum combat weight was about 134 pounds (60.7 kg), which is today's lightweight . He played his first professional fight in 1801 against Caleb Baldwin , whom he knocked out in the 37th round . He later became English champion and had particularly famous fights against Tom Belcher (brother of Jem Belcher ). He is considered the first user of the right uppercut of the London Prize ring and the toughest racket of his time. After 1810 he temporarily withdrew from boxing and was in poor health. The defeat in his last boxing match in 1814 was attributed to his high alcohol consumption. He died a year and a half later at the age of 41.

Elias, along with Daniel Mendoza, is considered to be the best Jewish boxer of the pioneer era and was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
