Jem Belcher

Jem Belcher (born April 15, 1781 in Bristol , † July 30, 1811 in London ) was a British boxer of the bare knuckle age.

In 1799, the agile technician boxed a draw with Jack Bartholomew, won the rematch in 1800 and was recognized as a British champion (then unofficial world champion). In 1803 he lost an eye in an accident while playing Fives . In 1805 he was defeated in a title fight Henry Pearce, one of his ex-students.

In 1807 he was defeated by the talented young boxer Tom Cribb and, angry about high betting losses in this fight, caused a street fight, he was jailed for a month. He died early and completely impoverished.

In 1992 Belcher was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
