Otto Herschmann
Otto Herschmann (born January 4, 1877 in Vienna , † 1942 in Ghetto Izbica ) was an Austrian swimmer , fencer and sports official . He was one of the few athletes to win Olympic medals in various sports.
Sporting successes
At the Olympic Games in 1896 , he won the silver medal in swimming over 100 m freestyle. In 1912 he won the silver medal in saber fencing with the Austrian team . In the individual competition, he was eliminated in the first round.
particularities
When he took part in the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm , he was also President of the Austrian Olympic Committee (ÖOC). To date, he is the only President of a National Olympic Committee to have won an Olympic medal during his tenure.
Life
The doctorate lawyer was after his presidency the Austrian Olympic Committee from 1914 to 1932 President of the Association of Austrian swimming clubs. Otto Herschmann was deported by the Nazis to the Sobibor extermination camp on January 14, 1942 because of his Jewish descent . He died in the Izbica transit camp that same year.
On November 7, 2001 Otto-Herschmann-Gasse in Vienna- Simmering (11th district) was named after him.
