Leo Wallner (born November 4, 1935 in Amstetten , Lower Austria ; † July 29, 2015 in Vienna ) was an Austrian manager and sports official.

Life

The son of a family of timber merchants studied economics at the University of World Trade in Vienna and was chairman of the Austrian student body at the university for three years in 1957. In 1958 he obtained his diploma, his doctorate followed in 1961. Wallner was a member of the Catholic middle school association Ostarrichia Amstetten in the MKV and the Catholic student association Danubia Vienna in the ÖCV .

In 1964 he was appointed economic policy advisor to the then Federal Chancellor Josef Klaus . Four years later (1968) he took over as general manager , the Casinos Austria AG and converted it into one of the largest companies in this industry around the world. In May 2007 he retired as General Director, but remained with the company as Vice President of the Supervisory Board. His successor as general manager was Karl Stoss .

On November 26, 1990, he was unanimously nominated as the only candidate for the election to be held on December 12, 1990 as President of the Austrian Olympic Committee and since 1998 has also been a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). On September 4, 2009, he announced his resignation as President of the ÖOC, the background being unexplained cash flows in connection with Salzburg's failed Olympic bid. In December 2014 he was elected honorary member of the IOC and was awarded the Olympic Order .

He was married to the chamber singer Elisabeth Kales-Wallner , who died of cancer in 2005 .

honors and awards

Since 1983 he had been an honorary citizen of the market town of Velden am Wörther See . In 1998 he was named WU Manager of the Year by the Vienna University of Economics and Business . On March 21, 2006, he was awarded the title of Honorary Senator of the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU). In 2007 he received the Great Silver Medal of Honor with the Star for Services to the Republic of Austria .
