Joseph A. "Joe" Alexander (born April 1, 1898 in Silver Creek , New York ; † September 12, 1975 in New York City ), nickname : Doc , was an American doctor and American football player and - Trainer. He played mainly in the offensive line , including with the New York Giants in the National Football League (NFL).

Player career

College career

Joe Alexander studied at Syracuse University from 1916 to 1921 . He played American football for the Syracuse Orange from 1916 to 1920 . He played as a guard until 1919 and then moved to the position of a center . In the years 1918 to 1920 he was elected to the All American due to his athletic achievements .

Professional career

Alexander joined the Syracuse Pros in 1921, immediately after completing his medical degree , who played in the American Professional Football Association , which had existed since 1920 , but had to stop playing after only three games. In the current season he moved to the Rochester Jeffersons . The Jeffersons were a notoriously unsuccessful team that had to cease playing after the 1925 season. A year earlier, Alexander had switched to the New York Giants and was mainly used as a center, but also played, as was customary at the time, in the team's defense . Alexander was the first player to be signed by the newly formed team. In the years 1926 and 1927, the Giants were able to significantly strengthen their team. Players like Joe Guyon , Steve Owen and Cal Hubbard were signed. In 1927, Alexander won eleven of 13 games with the Giants, which meant winning the NFL championship . Alexander ended his career after this championship.

Coaching career

Alexander worked twice as a player-coach. In 1922 he coached the Rochester Jeffersons unsuccessfully. In 1926 he took over the position of coach with the Giants. He finished the season with eight wins, four defeats and one draw. In 1942 he returned to football again and was a coach at the City College of New York .

According to the NFL

"Doc" Alexander was one of the few players who played for a fixed annual salary. Nevertheless, he worked as a doctor when he was not playing. Alexander became a pulmonologist in New York City and built one of the first tuberculosis clinics there. He died in 1975. His grave is unknown.

Honors

Joe Alexander was elected All-Pro twice , he has been a member of the College Football Hall of Fame since 1954 and of the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame since 1985 . In 1996 he was inducted into the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame . His college has given the Joseph Alexander Award to the best player on the college football team every year since 1954 .
