Elka de Levie
Elka de Levie (born November 21, 1905 in Amsterdam , † December 29, 1979 there ) was a Dutch gymnast .
Elka de Levie was Olympic champion in the all-around with the Dutch Olympic team. In the history of the Olympic Games , this was the first time a Dutch woman had won a gold medal. About half of the Dutch gymnasts at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam were of Jewish descent. Of the five Jewish gymnasts of the gold row of 1928, she was the only one to survive the extermination of European Jews by the Germans. Her teammates Helena Nordheim , Anna Polak and Judikje Simons were murdered in Sobibor , Estella Agsteribbe died in Auschwitz . The coach of the winning team, Gerrit Kleerekoper , did not survive Sobibor either.
Elka de Levie died in Amsterdam in 1979 .
