Nikolaus Hirschl

Nikolaus "Mick (e) y" Hirschl (born March 20, 1908 in Vienna ; † October 10, 1991 ) was an Austrian wrestler .

Hirschl, son of the owner of a kosher butcher shop, initially did gymnastics with the Makkabi association and then went to the Zionist-oriented SC Hakoah Vienna . He was involved with the Social Democrats and the paramilitary Republican Protection Association . After he shot and killed a Nazi in a park - according to other sources, he only seriously injured him - he fled to Palestine in 1934 . During the Second World War he carried out command actions against the Nazis in North Africa for the British Army. In 1947 Hirsch emigrated to Australia .

Hirschl won two bronze medals at the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles . He was successful in the heavyweight division in both the Greco-Roman style and freestyle for Austria. As a wrestler for the Hakoah, he fought off anti-Semitic attacks together with other teammates and thus fulfilled a protective function against the other sections.
