Richárd Weisz

Richárd Weisz (born April 30, 1879 in Budapest ; † December 4, 1945 there ) was a Hungarian wrestler and weightlifter . He was an Olympic champion in Greco-Roman style wrestling at the 1908 London Heavyweight Games .

Career

Career as a wrestler

Richárd Weisz began heavy athletics in Budapest in 1896 . This means that in addition to wrestling, he also engaged in weightlifting , as was often the case in the early years of modern sport. He became a member of the Hungarian Athletic Club Budapest , in 1908 he switched to MTK Budapest .

Under the guidance of Janos Weigand, he developed into a very strong athlete who always started in the heavyweight division. It should be noted that the weight limit was often set differently from competition to competition at his times. Sometimes the heavyweight began at 75 kg and at the 1908 Olympic Games, for example, only at 93 kg.

In wrestling, Richárd Weisz was the first Hungarian champion in the heavyweight division in the Greco-Roman style in 1903, which at that time was only wrestled in Europe, except in the Anglo-Saxon countries. He repeated this success ten more times until 1911. It was not until 1912 that he was replaced by Tibor Fischer as the Hungarian wrestling heavyweight champion.

In 1904 he started at a world championship in Vienna . He defeated Henri Baur and Karl Höltl from Austria in the heavyweight division , but lost to Anton Schmitz , also an Austrian. With this defeat he was eliminated from the competition. As was customary at the time, only the top three winners were determined in those years. According to today's rules, Richard Weisz would have come in 9th place.

In 1910, Richárd Weisz started at the Olympic Games in Athens (so-called intermediate games). His placement is nowhere recorded because he was not one of the three medal winners. The winner there Søren Marinus Jensen from Denmark before Henri Baur and Marcel Dubois from Belgium .

In 1908 he also competed in the Greco-Roman style at the Olympic Games in London . At these Olympic Games, competitions in both styles, free style and Greco-Roman style, took place for the first time. Richárd Weisz had three wins to win the gold medal . He beat Alexander Petrow , a 23-year-old student from Saint Petersburg , and the two Danes Carl Jensen and Søren Marinus Jensen.

At the Olympic Games in Stockholm in 1912, Richárd Weisz was no longer at the start. After his wrestling career, Richárd Weisz became a hotelier in Budapest and then a circus director.

Weightlifting

The only thing known about the weightlifter Richárd Weisz is that he became the Hungarian heavyweight champion between 1905 and 1908. In 1905 he won the first Hungarian weightlifting championship that was held.
