Anatoli Iwanowitsch Parfënov ( Russian Анатолий Иванович Парфёнов , scientific transliteration Anatolij Ivanovič Parfënov ; born November 17, 1924 in Dwornikowo , Moscow Oblast ; † January 28, 1993 in Moscow ) was a world-class Soviet wrestler.

Career

Anatoli Parfyonov began as a teenager with rings . Due to great diligence in training and good physical prerequisites, Parfjonow was a model athlete of 1.90 m in height and around 110 kg in body weight, he moved up in the early 1950s in the elite of Soviet wrestlers in the heavyweight class. He wrestled only in the Greco-Roman style and belonged to the sports association "Dynamo" Moscow. At first he was overshadowed by the "old stars" Johannes Kotkas , Arsen Mekokishvili and Alexander Masur, who had dominated the Soviet top heavyweight wrestlers for decades . In 1954, however, he managed the surprise and became Soviet heavyweight champion. In 1954, however, only world championships in free style were held and in 1955 the 43-year-old Alexander Masur was preferred to him again at the world championships in Greco-Roman style in Karlsruhe . At the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 he was used. He justified the confidence placed in him by the Soviet association officials and became Olympic champion . However, this victory was controversial and very happy. In his first fight he met the German champion Wilfried Dietrich and lost on points. After another point win, he was also defeated by the Swede Bertil Antonsson and was eliminated without a medal. In the meantime, however, the Soviet team management had protested against the evaluation of the fight against Dietrich. This protest was accepted by the jury and the verdict of the fight was changed to "Point winner Parfjonow". From a German point of view, wrongly. From today's perspective? Who can say that after 50 years. Dietrich, who won all of his other fights, was only a silver medalist. Parfjonow was also lucky enough to have two “byes” in the last three laps, while Dietrich had to wrestle and earned a missing point with two point wins, which left him a point worse off than Parfjonow in the end.

After the Olympic victory Parfjonow continued to fight until 1962, but did not play at the Olympic Games or World Championships, because in the Soviet Union he was in the shadow of Ivan Bohdan from 1957 , whom he could not defeat. After finishing his career as an active wrestler, Parfjonow, who was a sports teacher, became an excellent coach who looked after many young athletes in Moscow and brought them to the top of the world.
