Shaun Tomson

Shaun Tomson (born August 21, 1955 in Durban , South Africa ) (name derived from Tomchinsky) is a formerly professional surfer and businessman. In 1977 he became world surfing champion. From 1976 to 1989 he took part in the World Tour. In his home country South Africa he managed a six-year winning streak in the Gunston 500 competition from 1972 to 1977 . In 2004 Surfing magazine named him one of the 16 greatest surfers of all time.

His son Mathew died of a tragic accident on April 24, 2006 in Durban, South Africa.

Surfer's code

Shaun Tomson has published a short and memorable surfer code of twelve rules in book form. He emphasizes that he did not invent the rules, but only collected and formulated them. The rules are (in the numbering of the book):

  1. I will never turn away from the sea
  2. I will paddle around the break zone
  3. I will take the start with determination
  4. I will never fight back flow
  5. I will paddle out again
  6. I'll keep an eye out for other surfers
  7. There will always be another wave
  8. I will always surf back to the coast
  9. I will pass on my enthusiasm
  10. I'll catch a wave every day
  11. All surfers are connected by a sea
  12. I will honor the sport of kings
