The compact excavator , also called "midi excavator", is a construction machine and is used in light earthworks as well as in gardening and landscaping . The construction and function is very similar to that of a hydraulic excavator . Compared to a conventional hydraulic excavator, it has smaller dimensions and a low operating weight. Mini excavators are an even smaller class of equipment, and their performance is lower than that of compact excavators.

This class of equipment is also known as the enveloping circle excavator , as the superstructure does not extend beyond the undercarriage at any point during rotation. This property makes it possible to use it in very confined spaces and is achieved through a compact design in the rear of the superstructure.

Depending on the size, the compact excavator achieves an output of 35 to 54 kW. The devices can achieve an operating weight of 5 to 10 tons, and devices with typical compact excavator properties in the range of 12 to 14 tons are now also available. The performance and grave vessels grow accordingly, the boundaries that have grown out of history are becoming increasingly blurred. If a backhoe is used as a digging vessel, it will hold between 0.1 and 0.6 m³.

Technology and equipment

The machine consists of an undercarriage and an upper carriage that can be rotated. The undercarriage can either be equipped with a chain drive (usually designed as a rubber chain) or with a wheel drive for faster moving without a low-loader. A snow blade is attached to the undercarriage for stabilization and for small grading work. Alternatively, there can also be two hydraulic supports (for mobile devices to increase the stability and load, which is lower for mobile devices due to the design due to the higher center of gravity).

The boom is usually connected to the superstructure via an articulated joint, but there are also designs similar to the side offset boom for larger excavators, special solutions with side offset swivel boom to implement enveloping circle excavators, or special solutions such as B. the Takeuchi TB80FR, which can also laterally offset the swing boom to avoid the disadvantages of an enveloping circle excavator and a swing boom excavator. This construction of the enveloping circle or zerotails excavator enables work processes in the smallest of spaces as well as laterally offset work (e.g. along a house wall or digging work along the outer edge of the undercarriage). The range of applications is further expanded through the use of various attachments. These can range from backhoe buckets, swivel buckets, mulchers, ripping teeth or root teeth to asphalt or tree stump grinders to hydraulic hammers. The attachment program for the midi excavator is therefore the one that is most widespread in Europe, since the excavators stand between the mini and "normal" excavators and are increasingly taking over their lower area. With the larger midi excavators, excavations for single-family houses can now also be realized, which was previously the domain of excavators from 16 tons.
