Aztec is a genus of plants fromthe cactus family (Cactaceae). The botanical name was chosen by Friedrich Bödeker because the shape of the Aztekium ritteri plants reminded him of the sculptures of the Aztecs .
description
The plants of the genus grow individually or form groups, whose bodies are almost spherical to somewhat cylindrical and have a depressed, woolly apex. Their pronounced ribs often have a furrow and ribs on which numerous, small areoles sit along their edge. From the young areoles 1 to 3 grayish white, often curved or twisted thorns arise , but they soon fall off. The plants have a beet root .
The white, with a more or less pink central stripe, or magenta flowers appear at the top of the plant and open during the day.
The bare, slightly elongated fruits are hidden in the wool of the parting. The shiny, brownish black seeds are up to 1 millimeter long and about 0.5 millimeters in diameter. The hilum is covered by the seed appendage ( strophiola ).
Distribution and systematics
The species of the genus Aztekium are distributed in the Sierra Madre Oriental in the Mexican state of Nuevo León , where they grow on limestone and gypsum rocks.
The genre established by Friedrich Bödeker in 1929 was monotypical for a long time . It was not until around 1990 that Georg Hinton succeeded in discovering a second species, which is now named after him. It was not until 2012 that a third species was discovered, Aztekium valdezii . The type species is Aztekium ritteri . The genus includes the three types:
- Aztekium hintonii Glass & WAFitz Maur.
- Aztekium ritteri (Boed.) Boed.
- Aztekium valdezii Velazco, MAAlvarado & S.Arias
