Gymnocalycium ritterianum is a species of plant in the genus Gymnocalycium from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the German cactus specialist Friedrich Ritter .

description

Gymnocalycium ritterianum grows singly or occasionally sprouting with green, slightly purple-colored, flattened, spherical shoots and reaches heights of 3 to 4 centimeters with diameters of up to 11 centimeters. The ten to twelve ribs are furrowed across and divided into humps with a chin-like protrusion. Sometimes there is a bent back central spine . The seven to nine slightly pinkish-brown radial spines are up to 2.5 inches long. One of them is directed downwards, the rest sideways.

The broad, funnel-shaped, glossy white or light to medium pink flowers have a purple-pink throat. They reach a length of up to 6.5 centimeters and a diameter of 7.5 centimeters. The pear-shaped fruits are bluish.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Gymnocalycium ritterianum is widespread in the Argentine province of La Rioja at altitudes of 1500 to 2200 meters.

It was first described in 1972 by Walter Rausch .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
