Walter Rausch

Walter Rausch (born November 15, 1928 in Vienna ) is an Austrian cactus specialist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Rausch ".

Live and act

Walter Rausch studied seven semesters at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Around 1954 he became interested in South American cacti . In 1962 Walter Rausch made his first trip through Bolivia and Argentina . Research trips to Uruguay , Brazil , Peru and Chile followed . He explored the locations of the cacti on foot or as a passenger on the back of vans. He covered larger distances with a bicycle or a moped. All in all, he spent more than seven years in the natural habitats of South American cacti. He was often accompanied by various other cactus lovers, such as Ernst Markus, Ernst Zecher , Franz Kühhas and Dirk van Vlier.

In particular, Walter Rausch dealt with the genus Lobivia . Albert Buining encouraged him to write down his findings about this genus. His three-part main work Lobivia was published from 1975 to 1976 . The diurnal Echinopsidinae from an areal geographic point of view . 1985/1986 followed Lobivia 85 . Walter Rausch is the first to describe numerous species of cacti. His last first description so far is Echinopsis millarensis .

In 1969 Walter Rausch became a member of the International Organization for Succulent Research . In 1970 the members of the Society of Austrian Cactus Friends voted him an honorary member. He is also an honorary member of the Vienna Regional Group of the Society of Austrian Cactus Friends. On July 8, 1985, Walter Rausch received the CSSA Fellow Award from the Cactus and Succulent Society of America .

Walter Rausch was married twice. After the death of his first wife Margarethe (1928–1972), he married Rosario Rausch (* 1951) from Santiago del Estero in Argentina.

The following plant species from the cactus family were named after Walter Rausch: Echinopsis rauschii H.Friedrich , Gymnocalycium rauschii H.Till & W.Till , Lobivia rauschii Zecher , Parodia nothorauschii D.R. Hunt , Sulcorebutia rauschii Gerhart Frank and Lobivia walteri R.Kiesling .
