Espostoa ritteri is a species of plant in the genus Espostoa from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet ritteri honors the German cactus specialist Friedrich Ritter .

description

Espostoa ritteri grows tree-shaped with branched shoots and reaches heights of up to 4 meters. The cylindrical, dark green shoots have a diameter of up to 7 centimeters. There are 18 to 22 transversely furrowed ribs . Numerous white hairs arise from the white areoles on them . The single thin, reddish to black central spine is 0.7 to 2 centimeters long. The approximately 25 thin radial spines are reddish brown to yellow to white. The cephalium is yellowish.

The white flowers are up to 9 inches long. The carmine-red fruits have a length of about 3 centimeters and a diameter of 2.5 centimeters.

Distribution and systematics

Espostoa ritteri is widespread in Peru in the regions of Cajamarca and Amazonas in the valley of the Río Marañón below an altitude of 900 meters.

It was first described in 1960 by Albert Frederik Hendrik Buining .
