Sulcorebutia is a genus of plants from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The botanical name is derived from the Latin noun "sulcus" for furrow and the name of the genus Rebutia . It refers to the furrow between the humps of the plant body.

description

The species of the genus Sulcorebutia grow individually or sprouting. Their flattened spherical to spherical or short cylindrical shoots have a sunken shoot tip. The roots are fibrous or thickened like strands or form a thickened taproot . Their spiral ribs are completely divided into rhombic cusps. The somewhat woolly areoles on the top of the humps sometimes have a short furrow at the top. The thorns cannot always be divided into central and radial spines. If there are central spines, these protrude slightly. The radial spines, which are never hooked, are arranged in a comb-like manner and lie somewhat against the shoot or ascending and protruding.

The funnel-shaped or bell-shaped funnel-shaped flowers are bright purple, yellow or red in color, often also flamed, but rarely white. They often appear from older areoles at the base of the shoots. Your pericarpel and the corolla are covered with some coarse, conspicuous scales and otherwise usually bare.

The hardly fleshy fruits are spherical to flat spherical. They tear open across or dry up leathery. The fruits contain round to oblong egg-shaped, laterally slightly flattened, matt brown-black seeds 1 to 2 millimeters in length.

Systematics and distribution

The genus Sulcorebutia is common in Bolivia . The first description of the genus was published in 1951 by Curt Backeberg . The systematic position of the genus has not been fully clarified. The International Cactus Systematics Group of the International Organization for Succulent Research regards the species as belonging to the genus Rebutia . The genus is closely related to the genus Weingartia . The genus was provisionally recognized until the clarification of the taxonomic problems in Urs Eggli's editing of the cactus lexicon by Edward F. Anderson .

The genus Sulcorebutia includes the following species:

According to more recent morphological and DNA studies, an independent genus Sulcorebutia is not justified, it is almost clearly an artificial grouping, the species of which are not closely related. Like Aylostera and Mediolobivia , the genus should be synonymous with Rebutia .
